NORTHERN CIRCUIT: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Welcome to Serengeti National Park, an iconic jewel in Tanzania’s wildlife crown. The Serengeti comes from the Maa word ‘Serengit’, which translates to ‘the place where the land moves on forever’. It is the far-reaching, endless savannahs that inspired the Lion King, and is now the most popular safari destination in the world.

Renowned worldwide for its vast, sweeping landscapes and extraordinary biodiversity, Serengeti stands as a testament to the untamed beauty of Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is synonymous with the awe-inspiring Great Migration, a natural spectacle where millions of wildebeest and zebras traverse the endless plains in search of greener pastures. Beyond the migration, the park offers a year-round safari paradise, boasting a rich tapestry of diverse ecosystems, teeming with lions, elephants, giraffes, and an array of other wildlife.

Serengeti National Park is not just a destination; it’s a living, breathing testament to the raw essence of the African wilderness, inviting visitors to witness nature’s grandeur in its purest form.

best time to visit Serengeti?

The best time to visit the Serengeti National Park is in the Dry season (from late June to October). This period offers the best wildlife viewing in general – with the wildebeest migration as its absolute highlight. Wildlife viewing is good throughout the year, but certain areas are better at specific times. The timing of the migration varies every year (the best chance of seeing it is during June and July) while the wildebeest calving is from late January to February.

Wildlife in the Serengeti

The rich grasslands of the Serengeti allow it to support the millions of wildebeest that live here, before the dry season forces them north towards the Mara in southern Kenya. Woodlands and acacia trees dot the landscape, as do ‘koppies’, large granite outcrops rising up from the plains.

As well as the famous wildebeest migration, the park is home to the Big Five: rhino, lions, leopards buffalo, and elephant.

The Serengeti is home to some of the world’s fiercest predators: cheetah, spotted hyena (usually in the morning), jackal, bat-eared-fox, and wild dog. The park has the highest concentration of predators in Africa. Alongside these you’ll find giraffes, mongoose, baboons, aardvarks, colobus monkeys, monitor lizards, and giant Nile crocodiles.

The park also has the highest ostrich population in Africa, and more than 350 species of birds. There are at least four endangered animal species; the black rhino, elephant, wild dog, and cheetah.

During the dry season, when the short grasses and reduced watering holes make wildlife sightings much easier, it’s not uncommon to return from a safari in a state of silent disbelief. The abundance of wildlife, the beauty of the park, the sheer scale of it all.

Mighty Africa Xpeditions was professional and delivered what they promised. We fully recommend using their services. We were a group of 6 people, did a couple of days of safari at Tarangire National Park and Kilimanjaro trekking via Lemosho route (8 days). Everything has been terrific and ran very smoothly! Sarah at the office, it has been great during the booking process. She replied to all our questions with patience and competence. A staff Member showed up at the hotel with our trekking head guide the day before departing for the trekking for the briefing and for checking all our equipment. Colman, our head guide and Sadiki, the assistant guide: they have been professional, very friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond and I'm 100% sure that listening to their advice has been the main key to reaching the summit!, Summiting the mountain was one of the most difficult things I have ever done but with the support of the guides and porters I was able to make it to the summit. It was one of the best experiences of my life and one I won't ever forget.
