NORTHERN CIRCUIT: NGORONGORO CRATER

Ngorongoro Crater, often hailed as the “eighth wonder of the world,” is a geological marvel nestled within Tanzania’s expansive highlands. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the result of a collapsed volcano, forming a vast caldera that cradles a unique and self-contained ecosystem.

Encircled by towering crater walls, the Ngorongoro Crater is a haven for an astonishing concentration of wildlife, including the iconic Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. Its diverse habitats, from lush grasslands to acacia forests, create a microcosm of African biodiversity. Visitors to the crater are treated to unparalleled wildlife viewing, where encounters with predators and prey unfold against the backdrop of this ancient and majestic landscape.

Beyond its natural allure, Ngorongoro Crater offers a glimpse into the coexistence of wildlife and local Maasai communities, making it a truly extraordinary destination for those seeking an immersive and unforgettable safari experience.

best time to visit Ngorongoro?

Wildlife viewing inside the Ngorongoro Crater is superb at all times. However, grass on the crater floor is short in the Dry season (June through September) and this makes animal spotting easier. The scenery is lush and spectacular in the Wet season months (from November to May).

Wildlife in Ngorongoro

Whether you’re staying in a lodge on the crater’s rim or just visiting for the day, guided game drives give you a chance to explore the crater and its wildlife. You can opt to join a shared game drive or have a private guide who’ll tailor the drive to your interests.

You start the day from the top of the crater, where you can gaze over the rim and see the 25 km (15.5 mile) hollow in the Earth stretching before you. Evergreen forest clings to the slopes, and clouds cast rolling shadows over the grassland and pockets of acacia trees. Far below, animals move like tiny ants. As you descend, you begin to make out what they are: antelopes, buffalo, wildebeest and Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles.

Once on the crater floor, your guide’s knowledge of the land comes into play to get you close to animals both common and, if you’re lucky, rare. Sightings of black rhino are far from guaranteed, but you’re in the best place to find them.

A drive over to Gorigor Swamp is likely to give you views of large-tusked elephant and hippo, while in Lerai Forest you might encounter baboons and leopard in the branches of yellow fever and acacia trees.

While the crater is usually busy with other safari vehicles (especially during the dry season, between July and October), staying on its rim means you can be the first into the crater and the last out, with day-trippers limited to six-hour visits. Alternatively, you could travel here outside the peak months, when it’s much quieter but there’s more chance of rain.

Mighty Africa Xpeditions was professional and delivered what they promised. We fully recommend using their services. We were a group of 6 people, did a couple of days of safari at Tarangire National Park and Kilimanjaro trekking via Lemosho route (8 days). Everything has been terrific and ran very smoothly! Sarah at the office, it has been great during the booking process. She replied to all our questions with patience and competence. A staff Member showed up at the hotel with our trekking head guide the day before departing for the trekking for the briefing and for checking all our equipment. Colman, our head guide and Sadiki, the assistant guide: they have been professional, very friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond and I'm 100% sure that listening to their advice has been the main key to reaching the summit!, Summiting the mountain was one of the most difficult things I have ever done but with the support of the guides and porters I was able to make it to the summit. It was one of the best experiences of my life and one I won't ever forget.
