SOUTHERN CIRCUIT: NYERERE NATIONAL PARK | SELOUS

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, there was no specific “Nyerere National Park” in Tanzania. However, plans for the establishment of a national park named after Tanzania’s first president, Julius Nyerere, were underway in the Selous Game Reserve. If this park has been officially established since then, I recommend checking the latest sources for accurate and up-to-date information.

As of my last update, the Selous Game Reserve itself was one of Africa’s largest and most diverse wildlife areas, boasting a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. If the establishment of Nyerere National Park has occurred within the Selous Game Reserve, it would likely be a testament to Tanzania’s commitment to conservation and honoring its historical figures in the realm of wildlife preservation. Please verify from current sources for the latest details on the park’s status and features.

best time to visit Nyerere National Park?

Like most national parks in Tanzania, the dry season from June to October is perfect for game viewing, as the vegetation is more sparse, making it easier to spot animals. March to May and late October to mid-December is the rainy season, which makes many of the roads impassable and animals harder to spot.

For bird enthusiasts, we also recommend the shorter dry season from mid-December to March, as many migratory birds then settle in Selous. If the scarce wild dog is what you are after, June to August is perfect, as this is their denning season.

Wildlife in Nyerere National Park

Selous boasts some of the best wildlife densities in Tanzania. The reserve has 40,000 hippos, 120,000-150,000 buffalo, 100,000 wildebeests, and 35,000 zebras inhabit an area the size of Denmark.

The sheer amount of prey attracts a diversity of predators including 4,000 lions, as well as leopards, hyenas and crocodiles. Some rarer species include the African wild dog, of which 50% of its population live in Selous, as well as the sable and puku antelopes.

It is also one of the few places in Africa where the endangered black rhino can be found. Bird enthusiasts will also cherish this place, as 440 different species of bird populate this area. These can best be discovered by a boat safari.

Mighty Africa Xpeditions was professional and delivered what they promised. We fully recommend using their services. We were a group of 6 people, did a couple of days of safari at Tarangire National Park and Kilimanjaro trekking via Lemosho route (8 days). Everything has been terrific and ran very smoothly! Sarah at the office, it has been great during the booking process. She replied to all our questions with patience and competence. A staff Member showed up at the hotel with our trekking head guide the day before departing for the trekking for the briefing and for checking all our equipment. Colman, our head guide and Sadiki, the assistant guide: they have been professional, very friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond and I'm 100% sure that listening to their advice has been the main key to reaching the summit!, Summiting the mountain was one of the most difficult things I have ever done but with the support of the guides and porters I was able to make it to the summit. It was one of the best experiences of my life and one I won't ever forget.
