Why You Need to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro!

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a pursuit laden with personal, physical, and emotional rewards. One compelling reason is the unparalleled sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering Africa’s highest peak, standing at 19,341 feet. The summit, known as Uhuru Peak, offers breathtaking panoramic views that extend as far as the eye can see, providing an awe-inspiring and unforgettable experience. The trek itself traverses diverse ecological zones, from lush rainforests to barren alpine deserts, offering a unique journey through changing landscapes.

Additionally, climbing Kilimanjaro provides a challenge that pushes individuals beyond their comfort zones, fostering resilience and mental strength. The camaraderie formed with fellow climbers and the interactions with local guides and communities enhance the cultural experience, creating lasting memories.

Many climbers are drawn to Kilimanjaro for its symbolic significance, representing personal growth and the triumph of determination. Whether seeking adventure, a physical challenge, or a deeper connection with nature, the reasons to climb Mount Kilimanjaro are as diverse as the landscapes it encompasses, making it a truly extraordinary and transformative journey.

KILIMANJARO HIKING HIGHLIGHTS

A Symbol of Freedom

Mt Kilimanjaro inspired an entire continent to embrace freedom. The highest peak in Africa belongs to Tanzania which is the first nation in Africa to gain its independence from colonial powers. Before gaining independence from the United Kingdom as a Commonwealth realm in 1964, the country was known as Tanganyika.

After signing the Articles of Union in 1964, it officially joined with the People’s Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, and within a year, it changed its name to the United Republic of Tanzania. The soon-to-be President, Julius Nyerere was quoted saying: “We, the people of Tanganyika, would like to light a candle and put it atop Mount Kilimanjaro which would shine beyond our borders and give hope where there was despair, love where there was hate, and dignity where before there was only humiliation.” Today, the summit is called Uhuru Peak, the Swahili word for “Freedom.”

#1- It is a world icon

Did you know that while the entire United States enjoy 7 climatic zones, Mount Kilimanjaro enjoys 5? Looking into the journey beyond the magnificent snowy summit, Mount Kilimanjaro guarantees an experience that is out of this world. Like walking from the Equator to the North Pole in just a span of days, the scenic changes in vegetation and climate creates that feeling of “traversing through different worlds within just a few hours.”
Here are Kilimanjaro’s 5 climatic zones:

  • Cultivation: Farmlands, small villages, coffee and fruit plantations
  • Rainforest: Most wildlife can be found here
  • Heather-Moorland: Shrubs and unique flora are everywhere
  • Alpine Desert: Barren and unique landscapes featuring volcanic rocks in varied shapes and sizes, and also extreme temperatures
  • Glacier Summit: An arctic zone

#2- It Is Home to Fascinating Wildlife

If breathtaking scenery and an exciting experience were not enough for you, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro also offers you the opportunity to make encounters with some of the most beautiful animals in the world. The high altitude at the equator level creates a unique ecosystem hosting around 140 different species of mammals, massive numbers of birds, and some unique flora such as the famous Kilimanjaro tree. If you are a nature-fan, you will for sure be amazed by the experience!

#3- It is both remote and accessible

Mount Kilimanjaro features a remote wilderness that’s incredibly alluring. In fact, it sits very near Serengeti, one of the world’s wildest safari park. But, despite Kili’s wild nature, it remains very accessible to travelers around the globe.

In fact, visitors can easily fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Arusha, Tanzania if they want to visit Kilimanjaro. From Arusha, the mountain, which is located inside Kilimanjaro National Park, is just about 45 minutes drive away.

Another alternative route is for visitors to fly via charter plane. Or, they can fly into other airports and then catch a domestic flight to Kilimanjaro.

  • Travelers can fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, southern Tanzania. From DAR, many options are available to get to Kilimanjaro – from domestic flights to riding a public bus.
  • Travelers can fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, Kenya. Like DAR, a whole slew of options is available in reaching Kilimanjaro. Plus, this route is also known to be cheaper.

#4- It offers superb personal accomplishment

Many people come to climb the iconic mountain to mark important events in their lives such as retirement, marriage, graduation and many more. But aside from these remarkable milestones, Mount Kilimanjaro gives you a good reason to smug for months. After all, you’ve been on top of the world, haven’t you? Well, not only were you able to successfully reach one the highest summits in the world, but you are also able to write your name on a hidden notebook tucked in a wooden box on Uhuru Peak. This makes your accomplishment part of history – something that lives on forever.

#5- It helps greatly its local economy

Thanks to Kili’s 40,000 climbers each year, its local economy is thriving and is, in fact, generating about $20 million a year. As a result, guides, porters, cooks, food producers, travel agencies or operators, hotel staff, local merchants, etc. provide local jobs in a region that sadly remains one of the poorest in the world.

Mighty Africa Xpeditions was professional and delivered what they promised. We fully recommend using their services. We were a group of 6 people, did a couple of days of safari at Tarangire National Park and Kilimanjaro trekking via Lemosho route (8 days). Everything has been terrific and ran very smoothly! Sarah at the office, it has been great during the booking process. She replied to all our questions with patience and competence. A staff Member showed up at the hotel with our trekking head guide the day before departing for the trekking for the briefing and for checking all our equipment. Colman, our head guide and Sadiki, the assistant guide: they have been professional, very friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond and I'm 100% sure that listening to their advice has been the main key to reaching the summit!, Summiting the mountain was one of the most difficult things I have ever done but with the support of the guides and porters I was able to make it to the summit. It was one of the best experiences of my life and one I won't ever forget.
