There are two primary choices for sleeping on Mount Kilimanjaro. You will be staying in tents on the mountain if you are traveling any other route than Marangu. Your porters will carry these up, and your agency or operator will supply them. Avoid the temptation to spend the night somewhere else, such in one of the many caverns along the way, as park officials mandate that you set up your tent only at approved campsites.
You are not allowed to camp on the Marangu Route. Rather, every hiker rests in cottages located along the trail. It may seem a little awkward and even frightening at first to spend the night in a big room full of strangers. However, the majority of people rapidly adjust to the experience.
These huts often include dormitory-style sleeping quarters, with four to twenty beds per room. Although there are campers along this path, they are trekkers who ascended via the Rongai path and are currently descending on Marangu.
It should be noted that although many of the campsites on Kilimanjaro are referred to as “huts,” they do not actually provide sleeping quarters. The rangers dwell in these green shacks while they are assigned to a campsite, hence the name. Trekkers could once spend the night in these huts, but that is no longer the case.
In conclusion, accommodations are huts along the Marangu Route and tents at approved campsites elsewhere.
Choosing the right sleepwear for a Kilimanjaro expedition is crucial to ensure comfort and warmth in the varying climates encountered during the trek. Given the significant temperature drops, especially at higher altitudes, it is recommended to dress in layers. A moisture-wicking base layer is essential to keep sweat away from the skin, helping maintain warmth. On top of the base layer, a thermal insulating layer provides additional warmth, and a good-quality, cold-rated sleeping bag is necessary for insulation during the chilly nights. Wearing socks and a beanie can also contribute to preserving body heat.
Additionally, it’s advisable to have a neck gaiter or balaclava to protect the face and neck. The choice of sleepwear should be adaptable, allowing for adjustments as temperatures fluctuate throughout the night. By carefully selecting and layering sleepwear, climbers can enhance their overall comfort and ensure a restful night’s sleep on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.
